As I write this I’m listening to the introduction for the SCBWI summer conference. The speaker is asking us to set our intentions for the conference and beyond: mine is to refresh my creative practice as we head into the new school year (and hopefully find some more time for writing). What are your creative intentions for the next few months ahead?
Currently obsessed with
🎾Break Point on Netflix. I’ve always enjoyed watching Wimbledon but I’ve never paid much attention to the other championships. I love this insight into the players and what it takes to be the top of their profession. There’s so much more to it than talent and physical fitness. Mental fitness and having a good team around them is crucial to the players’ success too.
💻 My new MacBook. Why did I ever switch to Windows? So happy to have a new laptop again.
🍿Going to the movies. We’ve been enjoying lots of matinees over the summer and I love our local cinema/movie theater as you can order food to your reclining seat. I’m fond of the giant pretzel, the kids like the churros.
Writing Tip of the Week
Read your work aloud. I catch mistakes, places where the dialogue sounds unnatural, and notice where sentences don’t flow properly. I think it’s especially essential to read picture books aloud, after all that’s how your finished book will be read to the kid audience.
Writing Prompt
Go through your ideas files and find two ideas (or more) to blend together into a story.
News
It’s not too late to preorder the fifth and final installment* in The Wish Library series. The publication has been slightly delayed to October 26 so that gives you more time to catch up with the whole series!*
Until next week, happy writing and reading. Let me know what you’re enjoying this week.
