Interesting things this week
According to the Washington Post “just 11 people filed 60 percent of all book challenges issued in the entire United States during the 2021-2022 school year.” 11!! There are many more of us that oppose the bans (75% of Americans). If you want to take action, visit PEN America for letters you can send to your state officials and congress. Also pay attention to local elections for school districts and attend school board meetings.
Banned Book List* - 15% off banned books at Bookshop.org through Oct 31 with the code BannedBooks23. I’ll donate any commission I get from Bookshop this month to PEN America.
Hadestown Tiny Desk Concert - even more into this musical now after seeing this from the Broadway cast.
Silent Walking (NYT Gift link) - I still like a podcast when I’m walking but there’s something to be said about letting your mind wander occasionally. What do you listen to when you’re walking?
Writing Tip of the Week
Edit backwards! If you’ve revised and revised but something isn’t working with your book, try revising from the end. I’ve tried this and it really helps you see your work with new eyes. (Unusual Writing Tips via Kidlit411)
Writing Prompt
Look around your room right now and choose five random objects. Write a story about them.
